After establishing an edge in its military engagement with Pakistan, India is actively working to shape global perception by directly addressing the international community. On Tuesday, the Indian Army briefed defence attachés from 70 nations on the successful execution of ‘Operation Sindoor’, aiming to provide a factual account and counter what it describes as Pakistan’s misinformation campaign.

India asserts that the operation has established a “new normal” in bilateral relations.

Defence sources revealed that defence attachés from China and Turkey were not invited to the briefing at Manekshaw Centre, Dhaula Kuan, due to their alleged role in supplying weapon systems to Pakistan that were used against India in the recent conflict.

Modern-day warfare

This military briefing is part of a broader diplomatic strategy of the government. The Ministry of External Affairs, too, has been engaging with diplomats, individually and in groups, to explain ‘Operation Sindoor’ and India’s rationale for its precise and restrained response to Pakistani aggression targeting civilians and military installations.

The Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff conveyed on ‘X’ that Lt. Gen DS Rana, Director General Defence Intelligence Agency, provided the foreign service attachés with details of ‘Operation Sindoor’, emphasising India’s “demonstrated strength and national resolve through military superiority in the new-age warfare.”

Army sources stated that the briefing aimed to cut through the “fog of war” created by Pakistan’s alleged lies, disinformation, and misinformation disseminated through official channels and social media.

Smart move

Army sources highlighted the unprecedented nature of this large-scale collective briefing for defence representatives, contrasting it with previous instances like the Balakot airstrike, where outreach to defence attachés was not collective.

A defence expert noted that India’s approach to managing perception involves a deliberate and methodical collation of information – a sign of a matured democracy – before engaging the international community.

While acknowledging Pakistan’s potential early attempts to control the narrative after the May 7 strikes, the expert pointed out that India effectively countered this by providing detailed, evidence-based briefings through its Directors General of Operations of Military, Air Force and the Navy.

The expert also suggested that these briefings could serve as a platform to promote India’s indigenous defence capabilities for potential international sales.
